Reviewing the Result Files

At this stage, the matching engine will have created several result files. Your primary focus of attention should be the file named "shortlongterm.csv". This file is again in a format that is called a comma separated value file (hence the ".csv" extension) and it will probably be associated automatically with a spreadsheet program on your computer if you have one.

In actuality, this is no more than a text file with the columns divided by commas, and so it can also be reviewed in any word processor. If you choose to view it in a word processor instead of a spreadsheet you may wish to search and replace the commas with tabs or multiple spaces to present a more human readable format.

This shortlongterm.csv file is actually the result file in columns that correspond to the IRS Schedule D and it contains totals. For traders with many trades, the actual form Schedule D is often completed with only the totals and the words "various" and this information is appended thereto or the additional detail is offered on request. Consult your professional for personal guidance on the best method to put this information on your schedule.

In addition to the shortlongterm.csv file, you will have a file named "stillopen.csv". This file will contain any transactions that were not matched by the trade engine and should correspond to positions that were open at the time the data was captured. A review of this file should correspond to trades that were still open. However, in the case of splits or carryover positons, it may contain information indicating that the preprocessed data file should be manually altered and the data matched again.

Additionally, there is an "importfile.txf". This file is a file in the ".txf" format which is a format used by consumer financial applications to import trade data (such as Intuit's products). This import file is created prior to the was sale filter (if the wash command is used). Despite the ".txf" file being a universal format, the various consumer products treat the was sale information differently. If you are affected by wash sale issues you should NOT use the importfile but should supply the tax program with the results from the shortlongterm.csv file.
